In Tamil it is known as காயா. The dye obtained from the fruits was used to stain inscribed palm leaves, which were the traditional method of keeping records in the temples. Memecylon flowers are generally seen in the summer after the first heavy rains, and fill the air with a heady scent during this period. Mother gave it two names, Miracle and Air of Auroville, and described it as "marvelous, strange, unexpected".
The poe Tree series was born out of an exquisite hand-made paper craft and the desire to present the richness of Auroville plants to children. "The Miracle" is the eighth book in the series.

The story of a little fox who wanted to remember what it was that his heart loved so much. A charming tale that will delight children — a poem that will touch them deeply — and an initiatory tale what will remain with them for a long time. (series PoeTree)
The "miracle" or Memecylon umbellatum is found in the native forests of peninsular India. It takes the form of a shrub or a tree depending on the local conditions. It is well known for its distinctive blue flowers which are visited by bees. Its fruits are an important source of food for many bird species as well as a few mammals.
