Sri Aurobindo believed that a study of the Veda based on a modern method of critical research would reveal the esoteric and psychological sense of the Veda that was concealed behind an arcane system of symbols and rituals. He held that the ancient spiritual conceptions expressed in the Veda had perhaps once been a common culture spread over a large part of the earth, with India as a centre.
